Prehnite Gemstone Facts and History
The Prehnite Gemstone is an eye-catching apple-green inosilicate mineral made of calcium and aluminum. The gemstone’s distinctive color is caused by traces of iron in the mineral and creates a variation of other colors with the addition of other elements.
The gemstone can also come in deep olive green, gray, white, yellow, and colorless shades. The rarest color of a Prehnite Gemstone is orange, only found in Quebec, Canada. However, the striking color of the stone can fade or shift through prolonged exposure to sunlight or other chemicals.
This rare gemstone displays transparency, is often translucent, and exhibits beautiful chatoyancy, also known as a cat’s eye optical effect. The Prehnite Gem also displays white or black streaks throughout the stones.
It has a Mohs hardness scale of 6 to 6.5, making it pliable enough for ornamental use but hard enough for jewelry.
The Prehnite Gemstone was originally thought to be discovered in 1774 in the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. It was named after the Dutch Colonel Hendrik Von Prehn, supposedly the first person who discovered the gem and brought it back home to be analyzed.
However, Prehnite stones were already discovered earlier in 1771 by French astronomer Alexis Marie Bochon who took it to be analyzed and described to French mineralogist Balthazar Georges Sage. They named the striking green stone Chrysolite of Sage.
Of course, the accurate discovery of the Prehnite Gemstone is unknown because many African natives were already aware of the gem’s existence and used it in their rituals way before any foreigners settled on the continent.
Other names of the Prehnite Gemstone include Karoo stone and Grape Jade because the mineral can form in round clusters resembling grapes.
Prehnite Gemstones are mainly found in South Africa and Australia, but deposits were also discovered in China, Scotland, the United States, Mali, and Germany.
