Morganite Gemstone Facts and History

At its simplest form, the Morganite Gemstone is a pinkish variety of the beryl, a hard pale mineral composed of beryllium aluminum silicate. The Morganite Gemstone displays its captivating pale salmon pink, peachy to pale purple color when beryl forms with traces of manganese and iron in the mineral.

Other varieties of beryl related to the Morganite Gemstone are emeralds and aquamarine. Also called pink emerald and cesian beryl, Morganite is the second rarest variety of beryl just after the red beryl, also known as bixbite.

The pleochroic property of the Morganite Gemstone adds to the allure of its pink-to-purple tones. Pleochroism is a property of many gemstones where colors shift to different colors when viewed at different angles.

Morganite Gemstones were first discovered on an island off the coast of Madagascar. It was first named rose or pink beryl after being distinguished from other pink gemstones like pink tourmaline, pink topaz, and kunzite.

It was James Kunz, the chief gemologist at Tifanny & Co., who suggested pink beryl be renamed Morganite in 1911 after J.P. Morgan, a gem collector and financier of gem research. Morgan was also a noted contributor to the American Museum of Natural History, donating a significant amount of gems to their collection.

Although now depleted, Morganites from Madagascar are still considered the highest-quality Morganite Gemstones in the world.

Morganite Gemstones are now mined all around the globe with valuable pure pink Morganites found in Brazil. Other Morganite mines are present in Mozambique, Namibia, the USA, Italy, Afghanistan, and most recently Pakistan.

The largest Morganite Gemstone was found in Buckfield, Maine on October 7, 1989. Named The Rose of Maine, the gemstone weighed just over 50 lbs (23 kg), 23 cm long (9 in), and 30 cm (12 in) across.

Other sources state, however, that the largest Morganite in the world is currently housed in the British Museum, a large 598.50-carat cushion-cut Morganite Gemstone from Madagascar.

The Morganite Gemstones are highly valuable because of their rarity. Morganites are considered to be accessory minerals, only growing in small quantities next to other kinds of minerals. This makes the gems more expensive per carat, with deeper-colored gems being highly prized.

The Morganite Gemstone has a 7.5 to 8 Mohs hardness scale. And they are recently gaining popularity as jewelry pieces as preferred alternatives to diamonds.
